Launched in 2010, the Hang Seng Corporate Sustainability Index Series is Asia’s leading benchmark of sustainability investment – it is the first index series of its kind to focus exclusively on the environment, social and governance (ESG) performance of Hong Kong and mainland China stocks.
As regional interest in corporate sustainability grows, the Hang Seng Corporate Sustainability Index provides institutional investors and asset managers with a reference point to track companies that perform well with respect to corporate sustainability, enabling investors to diversify their portfolios, while providing companies with a benchmark of their ESG practices, from which they can strengthen their performance, increase investor confidence and enhance their market transparency.
The Hang Seng Corporate Sustainability Index Series is managed and compiled by Hang Seng Indexes Company, in collaboration with RepuTex-ESG, the ESG research arm of RepuTex Group.
The Hang Seng Corporate Sustainability Index Series comprises three tradable indexes – the Hang Seng Corporate Sustainability Index, the Hang Seng (China A) Corporate Sustainability Index and a cross-market Hang Seng (Mainland and HK) Corporate Sustainability Index.
In 2011, the Index Series was expanded by the addition of two new benchmark indexes – the Hang Seng Corporate Sustainability Benchmark Index and the Hang Seng (China A) Corporate Sustainability Benchmark Index. These indexes provide the market with a larger constituent base from which to track high ESG performing mid and small cap companies.
There are currently 30 constituents in Hang Seng Corporate Sustainability Index, and 15 in the Hang Seng (China A) Corporate Sustainability Index. The two benchmark indexes have a varying number of constituents, based on a variable ESG performance filter. In total, the Hong Kong and the China benchmark indexes will contain approximately 70 and 30 companies, respectively.
