One year into the Australian Government’s Carbon Pricing Mechanism (CPM), greenhouse gas emissions from power generation have fallen 7 per cent, with a record surge in renewable generation sending coal output to its lowest point in ten years.

In our Q4 FY12-13 quarterly update, RepuTex reviewed generation and emissions trends across the National Electricity Market (NEM) for the past 12 months, coinciding with the first anniversary of the start of the Government’s ‘carbon tax’ on July 1 2012.

Key findings include:

  • CO2 emissions from the Australian generation sector have fallen more than 7% over the past 12 months
  • Brown coal generation has taken the biggest hit, falling 14%, to a 10 year low
