In the lead up the upcoming federal election we examine the timing interaction between the continuing operation of the government’s Carbon Price Mechanism and the possible enactment of the Coalition’s Direct Action Plan. The ability of any government – returned or incoming – to enact its policy platform is complicated by a series of legisltative and political barriers over the next 6-12 months, such as the ability to pass repealing legislation, the new Senate timetable – likely to be October 2014, the timetable for the commencement of year three of the CPM, and the timetable for the defining – and passing – of the Coalition’s Direct Action Plan. In this Research Insights we examine the calendar of these events, and the critical timing triggers for FY14.
