MARKET MONTHLY: The State of the Australian Carbon Market – July Review 2023

Our State of the Australian Carbon Market report for July 2023 has now been published, reviewing activity in the Australian and international VCM over the last month.

Pricing across key methodologies fell through the month, led by Generic ACCUs, attributed to stronger supply and building surplus issuance, amplified by EOFY activity. Strong spot contracting saw the most units transacted since January 2023, with buyers seeing value in Generic contracts including No Avoided Deforestation Generics. ACCU issuances returned to earth in July, with rolling volumes remaining well below 2023 levels. In the international VCM, July saw a jump in value as the vintages used to calculate pricing rolled over, favouring recent vintages, and increasing average pricing of several categories.

The State of the Australian Carbon Market provides a monthly snapshot of activity in the Australian carbon offset and compliance market, reviewing key events, pricing and traded volumes for spot and forward contracts, along with our short-to-medium term outlook for the Australian market dynamics. Analysis also considers activity in the international voluntary carbon market, including voluntary cancellations and monthly pricing trends across key international registries and contracts.
