ANNUAL REVIEW: Australian carbon market value surges to record A$1.1B in 2024 behind growth in ACCU derivatives

Our Annual Review of the Australian Carbon Market report for 2024 has now been published, reviewing activity in the Australian carbon market over the past year.

RepuTex analysis indicates that the value of the traded market for Australian carbon credit units (ACCUs) grew to A$1.1 billion in the 2024 calendar year, surpassing $1 billion for the first time, led by increased demand from high emitting companies covered by Australia’s Safeguard Mechanism emissions scheme. Growth in over-the-counter (OTC) ACCU derivatives transactions, such as forwards and options, outpaced spot market growth in 2024, highlighting the uptake of more sophisticated risk management activities by corporates and financial intermediaries.
