Last week, Australia took a significant step towards establishing a new renewable energy certificate (REC) compliance market, with energy ministers agreeing in principle to require large data centres to offset their electricity demand using Renewable Electricity Guarantee of Origin (REGO) certificates sourced from new renewable generation.
While the proposal remains subject to detailed design and legislation, it represents the first credible pathway for REGOs to transition from a voluntary certificate framework into a mandatory compliance instrument.
