In late August, the Victorian Coalition pledged to scrap the VNI West transmission project if elected in November, adding a new layer of uncertainty to Victoria’s energy transition. The announcement comes as the Victorian Government itself reviews the cost of the Western Renewables Link (WRL) project, while Yallourn’s scheduled retirement in 2028 brings the state closer to a major change in its generation mix.
Together, these developments point to heightened transition risk for Victoria’s energy system, with our modelling indicating that material changes to WRL and VNI West could increase our Transition Risk Index (TRI) for the region by 25%
