The ACCU spot price has grown 87% calendar year-to-date, reaching a new record high of $31/t as new participants enter the market, particularly investors and intermediaries. While prices are being driven by a tight supply setting, leading to concern that the Australian carbon market has an intrinsic supply problem, contracting at much larger volumes continues to occur at record pace in the private market. This suggests that the current supply squeeze in the spot market – while real – has not been a limiting factor on market access to ACCUs.
