Our State of the Australian Carbon Market report for September 2024 has now been published, reviewing activity in the Australian carbon market over the last month.
September marked a milestone for the Australian Carbon Credit Unit (ACCU) market, with total traded volumes growing to a new record high, led by increasing compliance demand. Both spot and derivatives markets saw substantial growth, with derivatives trading (forwards and options) surging to a new record high, exceeding 1 million units for just the third time. In aggregate, our analysis indicates that year-to-date volumes are now +27% on the same period last year, and should surpass 2023 total traded levels within the next week. Spot prices showed volatility, with our Generic ACCUs (Benchmark) price assessment reaching a year-to-date high, while our HIR ACCU price assessment fell just shy of its earlier peak. Meanwhile, updated registry data highlighted a surge in project registrations and issuance, however, sporadic issuance continues to stifle primary supply.
RepuTex’s monthly State of the Australian Carbon Market provides a detailed review of activity in the spot and forward ACCU markets, including pricing and traded volumes for spot, forward and options contracts, along with market depth and net market balance.
