UPDATE: ACCU prices meet resistance in subdued market as Safeguard compliance events continue to drive activity

Our latest Carbon Weekly report has now been published, reviewing activity in the Australian and international carbon markets for the period 18 – 22 November 2024.

Last week saw a slowdown in activity across the Australian carbon market, with total weekly volumes for both spot and derivative contracts well below record levels set over proceeding weeks. Despite the lull, the market continues to be driven by compliance events under the Safeguard Mechanism, including the distribution of FY24 position statements, bringing entities to market to meet their liabilities and true-up their outstanding obligations. Meanwhile, the release of the new Environmental Plantings methodology signals some progress as the government continues to work towards overcoming supply side headwinds.

In this Carbon Weekly report, we analyse recent activity in the Australian and international voluntary carbon markets, including our ACCU spot price assessments, method spreads, forward activity, and traded volumes.
