BRIEFING: What is the potential impact of new priority ACCU methods, and where to next?

The Australian Government recently announced the prioritisation of 4 new proponent led methods for development under the Australian Carbon Credit Unit (ACCU) Scheme, selected by the Emissions Reduction Assurance Committee (ERAC) from a list of 39 Expressions of Interest (EOI) submissions.

The identified methods for prioritisation are:

  • Improved Native Forest Management in Multiple-use Public Native Forests (INFM) [EOI2024-27],
  • Improved Avoided Clearing of Native Regrowth (ACNR) Method [EOI2024-17],
  • Extending Savanna Fire Management to the Northern Arid Zone [EOI2024-24], and
  • Reducing disturbance of coastal and floodplain wetlands by managing ungulates [EOI 2024-05].

These align with our expected new methods for development, described in our earlier briefing, based on analysis of the government’s triage framework.

In this update, we discuss the newly announced priority methods and our expected timeline for new methodologies to be approved and actioned, and the scale of the emissions reduction opportunity. We also consider the landscape for new method development across the next tier of EOI submissions, and the interaction with other methods waiting to be formalised.
